  • It is A.D. 1141. A year that brings a tide of pilgrims to the Abbey. This is the tenth mystery in the series. You may want to start from the first to let the interacting mysteries reveal themselves in chronological order. This is the second one for me after "The Morbid Taste for Bones." I do have to warn you that the synopsis to "A Morbid Taste for Bones" and "Virgin in the Ice" is played out again somewhat in the first two chapters of this book. What can not be portrayed in the short Cadfael movi [...]

  • This 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters take place in a fog of civil war, where the English and Welsh were raiding each other’s borders and supporting one or another claimant to the English throne: Empress Maud or King Stephen. In spite of the ongoing violence, the author suffuses her novels with a deep sense of peace and contentment in the monastic life. A monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael, the ex-Crusader-turned herbalist [...]

  • When I watched the Cadfael TV series, this was the only episode I didn't like--found the tone unpleasant, and the story hard to follow. Many reviews said the TV screenplay was different from the book, and that the book was very good. I also found this to be the case. The book has an intriguing mystery plot, which I personally could not figure out until the reveal at the end. The tone was pleasant for the most part, as is usual with the Cadfael stories--it makes one want to venture into Cadfael's [...]

  • All of the Cadfael book are entertaining. Some more so than others, but all fun to read and sometimes challenging to figure out who dun it. But the best part is the most historically correct descriptions of places, practices and beliefs of the time of the stories.

  • Cadfael fans can enjoy another great visit to the 12th century! This series follows the familiar template of the series. There is always a great mystery, a romance and a twist or two before the mystery is solved. The joy of these books for me is how they draw the reader into the life and times of 12th century Shrewsbury. I highly recommend the entire series.

  • You can't beat Peters for elegant characters, an interesting well-explained part of history and well told stories. I'll read them all before I'm done. I'm only sorry that there are a finite number of books.
